It’s hard to scroll through social media today without feeling weighed down. Every post seems to highlight what’s broken in our world — government corruption, social decay, moral confusion. Everyone’s got an opinion, few have sources, and the result is a steady stream of fear, anger, and despair. We call it “staying informed,” but often it’s just doom-scrolling — searching for the next bit of outrage to confirm how bad things are.
Yes, there is evil and injustice in the world. God never asked us to ignore it. In fact, Scripture calls us to discern truth and stand against darkness. “And have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather reprove them.” (Ephesians 5:11, KJV) But we’ve gone beyond reproving evil — we’ve begun to glorify it through repetition. We share bad news faster than good. We analyze problems more than we act to solve them.
At some point, we must remember that God also calls us toward the light. “Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely… if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” (Philippians 4:8, KJV) That’s not denial — that’s direction. It’s God’s blueprint for spiritual and civic health.
If we’re going to heal our nation, we must learn to shift our gaze. Awareness without action produces only bitterness. It’s not our duty to be the world’s newsfeed; it’s our duty to be its example. Small, measurable acts of good — honest dialogue, service, community courage — these are the antidotes to despair.
We can’t fix everything, but we can choose what we amplify. We can choose to believe that light still overcomes darkness, and that truth, spoken with love, still moves hearts. The future will not be saved by the loudest complainers, but by those who quietly keep faith, do good, and refuse to let cynicism drown out hope.
Seek the good. Believe the good. Build the good — for yourself, your children, and your country.
“Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.”
— Philippians 4:8
